Last night Ryan Adams and the Cardinals made the last stop on their headlining tour at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA. I happened to pick up some pretty good tickets yesterday on craigslist for lower than face value (I refuse to give into ticketmaster and their $10/ticket fees) so off we went.
The sound at the amphitheater was great and the band was awesome. There was no opening act, so I was prepared for about 2 hours + of great music. About 7 or 8 songs in Ryan started complaining about his voice saying he sounded was sick and losing his voice and he was fighting through it. He sounded great, and fans from the crowd were shouting likewise. They played a few more tunes, and even the other guitarist, Neal sang one. They rocked out one more and Ryan abruptly walked off the stage. The time was about 9:45, and they started at about 8:35. I thought there’d be an encore at least, until people started booing. There’s no way he’s going to come back out when some people start booing. After about 3 or 4 minutes the house lights came on so we moved on.
This is the second show in a row this year I’ve gone to where there was no encore and it seemed to end abruptly. You can’t blame a singer for wanted to protect his voice, but it’s just disappointing.
Atlanta… Hi everyone, Brad here I am on the bus, heading home, after a long 3 weeks. We have all battled illness, I had a bad neck for a few days, and tonight, Ryan lost his voice. I heard it last night starting to go, I heard it today at radio, getting rougher, and tonight, it finally gave. Believe me, we ALL wish tonight’s show had not ended the way it did – it left everyone unsatisfied. Ryan, the band, and especially you, the audience. I’m sure Ryan will address this himself at some point, but we certainly did not intend for tonight’s show to go off the way it did. sometimes, shit just happens. As far as making up this show to the Atlanta audience – we owe you one. Atlanta has ALWAYS been a city that has shown us lots of love, and it breaks my heart to pull out of there feeling like we let you down. I know some people will understand, others may have already written us off – please, let us make it up to you. Somehow, someway, we will make this right. Thanks to everyone who came. you guys are the best, and you deserve the best! much love. I’m going home to sleep until Monday. yours humbly, Brad
I wonder how could they possibly make it up though? Play another show? I don’t think I’m going to be paying the same ticket price again. Would they play another show and have the ticket price cheaper in Atlanta? Yeah right. I guess they could let people who keep their tickets into a rescheduled show, but I doubt that would work.
That being said, the songs they did play were freakin’ incredible. Older songs or solo acoustic songs with the full band jamming were so good. Here’s the set list according to Ryan Adams Archive and the link to the over 10 pages (currently) about the drama from last night:
1. Into The Light
2. Cobwebs
3. Peaceful Valley
4. Goodnight Rose
5. Bartering Lines
6. Everybody Knows
7. Wonderwall (Oasis)
8. Fix It
9. Off Broadway
10. Sun Also Sets
11. Come Pick Me Up

12. Grand Island (Neal Casal)
