So with the revelation of the upper part of the statue – well, as much of a revelation as I think we’ll get, I think we got a huge piece of the Island’s mythology. Even if all we saw was the back of a giant statue. I can’t believe it’s been three years since we saw the foot.
So this statue looks quite like Anubis, which is the god of mummification and Afterlife in Egyptian mythology.
He’s half-jackal, half-man – and check out this excerpt from wikipedia:
The jackal was strongly associated with cemeteries in ancient Egypt, since it was a scavenger which threatened to uncover human bodies and eat their flesh[6] The distinctive black color of Anubis “did not have to do with the jackal [per se] but with the color of rotting flesh and with the black soil of the Nile valley, symbolizing rebirth.”[6]
Sound quite like our Island doesn’t it? The island is a place of Death or Rebirth, depending on how you look at it. So it’s not quite Purgatory, but it’s the gate to some kind of eternal life. It could really be Purgatory even though the producer’s said it’s not because they lie all the time. Look at the cross in Anubis’ hand. It’s the Ankh cross which is an Egyptian hieroglyphic character for “Afterlife.” It’s the same cross that the DHARMA guy Paul had when he died.
Speaking of hieroglyphics, remember all the symbols in the first Hatch? When Locke failed to enter the numbers the first time, the clock turned into these red Egyptian hieroglyphics.
We are told that the meaning of all of these symbols put together is “Underworld.” What if there was an ancient civilization that lived on the Island ages ago? They knew the place was special and whoever controls it can control where you go in the Afterlife. You can live there forever or move on to your next destination. Others/Hostiles anyone? Anubis, the jackal controlled all of those who could enter.
This sounds a lot like another black dog we know of, Cerberus, the 3-headed monster, protector of the Underworld.
The Island’s “Security System” – now relegated to protecting The Temple. What do you know – another ancient place covered in Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Back in Season One I like many others were sure the Island was Purgatory. It seemed like that
was the answer until people caught on and the show became successful and it evolved into something bigger. There has to be some reason Ben and Widmore both want to control it so bad. They know it has healing properties, time has no meaning, and it’s always moving through space. Perhaps Ben can go back in time and save his Mom from dying. Maybe Widmore wants to make sure he controls the power and no one else can get to it.
The Numbers, The Sickness, and The Whispers I think are all explained by the Island’s inability to stick in a point in Time and our characters are leaving themselves clues when they travel back in time.
Who is Amy’s baby? I think it’s Jacob. Horace did build the shack of course, so it would make sense his son would find solace there.
Adam and Eve? That’s Bernard and Rose who have perished when the Island moved back in time. We haven’t seen them all season and I bet our characters will come across them at some point this season. The white and black stones were a nice little clue.

Nice read. I hope they do get back to the adam and eve characters and I’d like to hurry up and return to my favorite story (Desmond’s).
It’s not Anubis. It has a crocodile head.
Right. It’s Tawaret. Look at the date of this post – March 6th, 2009.
I think this blogpost is spot on.
Much of the show can be related to Egyptian mythology. Horace, the mathemetician, is named after the egyptian god Horus who was known as the sky god. Taweret, the statue or “Big Foot” was the Egyptian goddess of death and rebirth. The Ankhs Taweret was holding in each hand are Egyptian symbols of eternal life. Expound upon that further: Hurley sees dead people? Maybe he’s seeing their “ka,” the Egyptian definition of a person’s “life force” or soul, which was believed to come into existence at birth and lived on after their death.
This link explains the stages of life believed by ancient egyptians and has many similarities to LOST story arcs.

I believe The Man in Black is possessing Locke’s “ka.” I also believe the island originated in the Mediterannean Sea, off the coast of northern Africa where Egypt and Tunisia (the Exit) are only a few hundred miles apart. This would also explain Jacob’s weaving, which depicts Egyptian characters with a Greek quotation across the top to the effect “May the gods grant all your desires.” Greece also is located on the Mediterannean. It’s possible these ancient civilizations (greece, Egypt, Asia perhaps?) used the Island as a gateway to the afterlife.
Did the “spring” remind anyone of a “lazarus pit” in the DC Comics universe used by one of Batman’s greatest foes, Ra’s Al Ghul, to ward off death?
I think the statue may by of the Croc god Sobek, and not the Teweret. I got the following from a summary on Sobek:
“Sobek’s ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part.”
That sounds like Jacob to me.
